Maltron keyboards take centre stage in the Office
section of the
Adaptive Technology Catalogue that details tools for
survivors of landmines and explosive remnants of war
Funded by the
US State Department, the USA based
Journal of Mine Action
has published an
Adaptive Technology Catalogue that features over 150
pages of tools for survivors of landmines and explosive
remnants of war. Maltron is the only keyboard
manufacturer to be featured in the Office section, with
reports on the company’s
single-handed
keyboards for left or right hand and
the
mouth/headstick
keyboard.
The shape and letter layout of
the Maltron
single-handed keyboards have been carefully planned
to take into account the limited number of keys that can
be accessed quickly and comfortably. The company’s
specially developed
self-paced training courses are freely available on
their web site and ensure that learning is quick and
easy. The keyboards offer push-on-push-off keys for
Shift, Control and Alt functions. This detailed
functionality is proved by users reaching 60+ words/min.
They measure 305 x 225 x 115 mm and weigh in at just
0.9 kg.
The
single finger,
head or mouth stick keyboard can be used for more
severe conditions, either on a table, or supported by
rear runners and an articulated arm adjusted to suit the
user. It is also fully ergonomic in that the
rectangular front is concave to match stick end
movement. The letter layout, equally ergonomic, is
arranged to have the most used letters grouped in the
centre to give minimum movement.

Star gazer RSI victim Sharmila finds keyboard restores
pain-free and rapid work rate
Sharmila G. had studied for
over ten years to achieve a final qualification in
astronomy but was continuously plagued by
keyboard-induced RSI. During her studies she had tried
switching to a trackball mouse, got a gel wrist rest and
tilted the keyboard towards the monitor without much
success despite a wrist brace and physiotherapy as pain
levels continued to rise. Using a conventional split
keyboard had also provided some relief but not enough to
continue keyboard work. The situation became critical as
she came to the full realisation that without
keyboarding skills she could not pursue a chosen career
in astronomy.
She switched to a Maltron fully-ergonomic keyboard in
2006 after “managing” for three weeks on a flat keyboard
and being “on the point of disability and stopping all
computer work”. She found Maltron’s keys “an absolute
dream to work with because of the soft touch and bought
another for home use. In fact she says, “As far as I am
concerned, it is Maltron or nothing”. She can now
continue her career as an astronomer as being unable to
use a computer would have led to a radical career
change.

Maltron’s service team changes UK
keyboard layout to US standard for Australian John
Australian John M.
had a problem. He had bought a Maltron fully-ergonomic
keyboard with a UK layout in the UK but really wanted a
US layout for work in Australia. He also wanted a second
keyboard to use at home. Maltron arranged to provide
him with a new US layout version within ten days and
asked him to return his UK version. On receipt, the UK
version was reprogrammed, fitted with new key tops and
sent back within three days.
Since converting to a Maltron
keyboard John has found that
RSI is “no problem, and fingers no longer sore” This was
in contrast to his pre-Maltron days when he experienced
pains in wrists, forearms, shoulders as well as sore
finger joints and “fizzy fingers”. He only needed two
days to realise that this was a “good keyboard”, two
weeks to be “happy “and a little longer “to become
proficient” and report that it works beautifully.

Keyboard Orders
for Poland and Korea
Maltron is proud to report an
order through their distributor from the Polish
Government for 60 single-handed keyboards, thirty for
the right hand and thirty for the left. And another
order from Korea for twenty-five right handed and
fifteen left handed keyboards.

Maltron “Magic” keyboard gets
Beverley back from deep despair in three days
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome,
Tendonitis, Tenosynovitis and a frozen shoulder, caused
by working long hours on a conventional keyboard, were
four excellent reasons why Beverley F.
could not work in an office any more. With time on her
hands at home she read story in the press about the
Maltron fully ergonomic keyboard and immediately ordered
one.
She found that within three days
she needed to get used to the unusual design and work
trough the training course, she was typing faster than
ever and waved farewell to extensive physiotherapy,
acupuncture, sports massage, osteopathy and finally the
attention of a chiropractor.
All her pre- Maltron symptoms of
pains in wrists, forearms, shoulders, neck and upper arms,
elbows and back, pins and needles and numb fingertips
had vanished as she mastered the Maltron keyboard. But,
if she tries to work on a conventional keyboard for any
reason all her problems reappear with a flourish.
Beverley says, “It is a miracle keyboard that saved my
office career, I can type all day using my Maltron, it
doesn’t hurt and my typing speed has got faster”

Lisa’s arthritic and nerve-damaged
fingers now respond at speed to her Maltron keyboard
Lisa F.
is a London office manager who was diagnosed with
arthritis and then found that she had nerve damage in
her fingers. This made everyday typing” very difficult
and extremely painful!” In fact, she was concerned about
how she was going to continue with full time employment
as her job involved plenty of keyboard work.
Someone mentioned that an
ergonomic keyboard might be an answer to her problems
and so she
Googled and came up with
Maltron fully-ergonomic keyboard. It originally appeared
a little daunting but a chat with a Maltron technician
resulted in a standard Maltron offer of a trial period
with a return clause. “It took a couple of weeks to get
used to the keyboard but in no time at all I was back to
my normal typing speed” reports a delighted Lisa.
Although the pain of arthritis
remains in the background Lisa
has found that using her Maltron fully-ergonomic
keyboard has “improved my productivity and I do not
suffer from pains in my fingers or wrists when typing”.
She continues “For anyone who
suffers with pain when typing I would seriously
recommend using a Maltron keyboard. Don’t let the
‘difference’ of the keyboard put you off trying it. The
health benefit of using one far outweighs the few days
of frustration it takes getting used to it”.

Sara hits 40wpm
in first speed typing class
Sara is a
young American girl with cerebral palsy and can only use
one hand. Her mother bought her a Maltron right-handed
keyboard and she started to attend a training scheme in
her hometown in Ohio. She has just completed her first
speed typing class and has hit a very worthy 40 wpm
typing speed.
She wants to
follow a secretarial career and is also studying
American sign language and Spanish.
