Exercise 40:

Here is a letter that uses all the alphabet and most punctuation marks. The semicolon, colon and exclamation mark are introduced. To make keying it easier it is broken up into sections.

Dear Sir, It is with great pleasure that I am now able to tell you that I have quite quickly learned to use every letter of the alphabet on this Maltron keyboard. I am amazed at such rapid progress.

Yes, I have the ability to find every letter from a-z with ready facility. There isn't any letter nor any common punctuation mark that I can't reach quite easily - no, there are no exceptions at all. The time I have spent on the fingering exercises has been justified because of the dexterity that I have already attained.

I find that all the letters are almost equally easy to reach. Even fingers that are commonly supposed to be weak are able to key on the letters they have to use with facility. This is because the Maltron keyboard has been shaped to fit the human hand. It is a great joy to use. The letters of the alphabet have all been arranged so that the most commonly used letters are right under the fingers. This just eliminates unnecessary movement of the fingers.

There are three less frequently used punctuation marks which I am now going to learn to use. Yes, while I am keying this letter to you. They are the colon, semicolon and the exclamation mark. The semicolon is keyed with the index finger of the right hand. It is next to the letter 'w'. Here it is; and the colon is in the shift position on that same key. That means that I shall use the left shift key. The colon is frequently used after the words 'as follows:'

Now for the exclamation mark. It is in the shift position above the '1' key on the left hand; so for the exclamation mark I shall use the little finger on the right hand for the right shift key and the little finger on the left hand for the '1' key, so here goes! There, I did it! These punctuation marks are all in equally accessible positions.

I shall key this letter twice more just because it provides extra practice on all letters. There is no prize for this effort, the prize is in knowing that I can now squeeze more work into each hour. Yours faithfully GENERAL MANAGER
