The little finger and the index finger are free to move sideways as well as up and down so they each have two columns. The two fingers in the middle have one column each. The home row is A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right hand.

The thumbs - which are your most powerful digit and have more flexibility and intelligence than any finger - have a small square of keys all to themselves.
Whilst training you must resist the urge to use fingers for thumb keys and try to use each finger only for those keys in its columns.
